Old Pembury Hospital demolition begins

Published: 9-May-2011

Demolition work has started on the old Pembury Hospital in Kent. Just weeks after the first phase of the replacement Tunbridge Wells Hospital opened to patients, the old facility is in the process of being knocked down, with the buildings being stripped of recyclable materials. Following the demolition of the first building, Woodlands House, which was used as a library and staff accommodation, the rest of the site will be leveled over the coming weeks, with care taken to relocate the protected bat and bird species living there. Following the work, the site will be transformed into new car parks, a helipad to support the A and E department, and landscaped heathland. New hospital project director, Graham Goddard, said: "We are very mindful of our obligations to reduce the impact on the wildlife and fauna of this very special site. The contractors are making good progress and are currently some weeks ahead of schedule."
