The Robert Jones & Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust will commence building works on a £14 million Theatre & Ward development.

At its Board meeting last Thursday, the Trust approved the scheme, designed by Gilling Dod Architects, at its final stage and gave the go ahead to commence the building works. The development will be located alongside the main hospital entrance, enabling the new theatre development to integrate with the existing main theatre suite and will re-provide the current modular day surgery theatres. It will include four new clean air Theatres, a High Dependency Unit and an Admission on Day of Surgery Unit. A new dedicated Bone Cancer Centre with inpatient and clinic facilities and a flexible multi-use ward will be built on the first floor.

The development has been planned in consultation with staff and patients to deliver best in class treatment facilities in cancer care and state-of-the-art operating theatres. Progressed through the P21+ Partnership Framework, the Trust has been working with its partners for the last 9 months in developing the detailed design.

The enabling works are due to begin on site within the next few weeks, with Kier starting construction work in the spring.

Wendy Farrington Chadd, Chief Executive said, “The Board have today approved the start of this fantastic development for the hospital. We look forward to seeing the building works commence in the next few weeks for what will be a tremendous development for patients, providing state of the art admission, ward and theatre facilities. This investment supports the hospital’s position as the leading centre for orthopaedic excellence in the UK”.
