MTX, working alongside P+HS Architects, has completed a new community diagnostic centre (CDC) at Milford Community Hospital

MTX has completed work on a new Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) at Milford Community Hospital.

The facility was constructed using Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) to enable faster, greener, and more cost-effective delivery.

MTX was appointed as the design-and-build contractor for Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust, creating a fully compliant diagnostic facility.

The new CDC is part of a national programme to reduce waiting lists and improve access to diagnostic services for patients closer to home.

The centre houses two MRI scanners and a CT scanner, along with consulting rooms and administrative offices.

The CDC is expected to deliver an additional 11,000 MRI scans and 9,500 CT scans each year, significantly increasing diagnostic imaging capacity across the region.

The project presented several challenges, particularly during groundworks on the site adjacent to Milford Community Hospital.

MTX rerouted existing water and gas mains and was required to amend foundation plans following the discovery of substantial sandstone deposits.

Working closely with P+HS Architects and the Trust, the contractor constructed a poured concrete slab to provide a stable, vibration-free base for the sensitive imaging equipment.

Once groundworks were completed, MTX craned into position 27 factory-manufactured structural steel modules.

These were produced off-site while work on the foundations was underway to shorten the overall construction programme.

The groundworks package also included hard landscaping around the building entrance, a filtration pond, and a new access road.

The new facility incorporates several specialist features to accommodate the sensitive nature of the equipment it houses.

This includes a Faraday cage surrounding the MRI rooms to eliminate electromagnetic interference and lead lining in the CT scanner room for radiation shielding.

In support of the Trust’s environmental goals, roof-mounted solar panels have also been installed to provide a source of renewable energy.

An independent link corridor, also constructed by MTX, connects the new CDC to the existing Milford Community Hospital building to enable convenient patient and staff access.

Ross Dunworth, Deputy Chief Executive at Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We were pleased to work in partnership with MTX on this project as they have extensive experience of constructing similar facilities at other NHS trusts. The new unit became operational at the end of March, and patients are now benefiting from this state-of-the-art facility.

“This will improve health outcomes by helping to speed up diagnosis and access to potentially life-saving treatments, whilst providing a more convenient service to patients closer to home.”

MTX Managing Director David Hartley commented: “MTX has been privileged to partner with a number of NHS Trusts which recognise the benefits of using modern methods of construction to ensure rapid delivery, high quality and good value.

“Our team brings a huge amount of experience and expertise to these CDC projects and while they often share characteristics, each facility is designed and built to prioritise the requirements of the individual NHS Trusts.”
