August saw the NHS’s Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) programme move another new facility into operation, while several other schemes reached important construction and development milestones.
The following is a roundup of key CDC milestones from August 2026.
CDCs that opened
Bridgwater CDC: The £17.8m Bridgwater CDC opened on 18 August, following the completion of the facility alongside Bridgwater Community Hospital.
Developed by Somerset NHS Foundation Trust through its managed service partnership with Ergéa UK, with Actiform as building partner, the centre was funded by NHS England as part of the national CDC programme.
The facility will provide MRI and CT scanning and includes Somerset’s first dedicated urology investigation unit.
Soon after opening, health technology company Predictive Health launched a new liver disease case-finding pathway using existing NHS blood test results.
The opening follows practical completion of the project in June, which was covered in the previous CDC roundup.
Braintree CDC: Construction of the new CDC at Braintree Community Hospital was completed in August, with the facility handed over to Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust.
McLaughlin & Harvey delivered the construction work, with the trust preparing the centre for final fit-out and installation of specialist diagnostic equipment ahead of the first patients in early September.
The Braintree facility is the third CDC developed by Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, following centres at Thurrock and Southend.
A further CDC is under construction at Pitsea, due to open in 2027.
CDCs progressing
Plymouth second CDC: Plans for a second £25m CDC in Plymouth were approved in July, with the project now moving towards the next stage of development.
The four-storey facility will be built at Colin Campbell Court alongside Plymouth's recently opened £22m CDC that was delivered by BAM Construction.
KTA Architects, which also worked on the first centre, designed the new facility.
Northamptonshire CDC: Plans for Northamptonshire’s third and largest CDC moved forward in August, with North Northamptonshire Council approving the disposal of land for the proposed facility.
The centre is planned for a site at Booth Drive, Park Farm industrial estate in Wellingborough, and is being developed by Kettering General Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
The scheme also includes an elective orthopaedic hub, which is expected to deliver at least 2,000 planned procedures a year, including hip and knee replacements.
Subject to planning approval, the centre is expected to open in 2028.
