Gilling Dod Architects are delighted to announce that Junction 17, a new CAMHS Unit in Prestwich for Greater Manchester West Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust has been shortlisted by Design in Mental Health for Design Project of the year 2014.
The state of the art facility is a Tier 4 young persons focused inpatient unit for vulnerable Children and Adolescents from across the North West. The new build project replaced the existing McGuinness Unit and attached School and was designed via intensive service user engagement. The modern, uplifting and non-institutional design provides 24 inpatient beds and includes an Intensive Care suite, appropriate therapy and activity spaces as well as a fully equipped integral college and learning zone. The unit was handed over in Sept 2013 to universal acclaim from staff, patients and families with the quality of the spatial design and healing environment attracting particular praise.

Junction 17 represents the ever evolving specialisms found in modern Mental Healthcare and is an example of bespoke design meeting the particular needs of Service Users. The Design is unashamedly modern and uplifting and provides safe and therapeutic spaces for the vulnerable young people who were instrumental in its inception.
