Work is under way on a £6.8m replacement for Hawthorn Medical Centre in Manchester, with NHS representatives, project partners and patients gathering on 3 November for a ceremonial groundbreaking event marking progress on the development.
The project involves NHS Property Services, NHS Greater Manchester, Manchester City Council and Hawthorn Medical Centre, with Read Construction appointed as main contractor.
Gilling Dod is leading the architectural design, supported by Curtins, Silcock Leedham Group and Modero.
NHS Property Services appointed Read Construction under an original £4.04m construction contract awarded in May 2026.
The contractor confirmed in September that work had started on site.
The development will replace the existing practice at Fallowfield Retail Park with a new single-storey facility on Moseley Road, less than 100 metres from the current site.
Designed by Gilling Dod, the approximately 8,600 sqft building will provide expanded clinical accommodation for the practice's approximately 6,000 registered patients and is expected to open in autumn 2027.
The new facility will include at least five additional consulting and treatment rooms, alongside a larger waiting area, dedicated training space and onsite parking.
Earlier design specifications provide for 11 consultation and examination rooms and three treatment rooms, while the latest project announcement highlights at least five additional consulting and treatment rooms compared with the existing practice.
The wider site plans also include 36 parking spaces, three electric vehicle charging points, cycle storage, landscaping and a new access from Moseley Road.
The development is targeting a BREEAM Excellent sustainability rating.
Temporary relocation during construction
While construction progresses on the replacement building, Hawthorn Medical Centre will temporarily relocate its services to accommodation at Asda Longsight from December 2026.
The practice needs to vacate its existing premises at Fallowfield Retail Park by December 2026, with the site earmarked for Lidl's redevelopment plans.
NHS Property Services secured the temporary accommodation approximately 1.1 miles from the current practice.
The site was selected based on its availability, accessibility, quality of clinical environment and ability to accommodate the practice's services safely and effectively.
The temporary facility will be fully equipped to support the same GP services, with onsite parking available. Information about public transport routes and travel options will be shared with patients in November.
Dr Laura Neilson of Hawthorn Medical Centre said the groundbreaking ceremony marked an important milestone following years of planning and partnership working.
"Breaking ground on our new permanent home is a hugely exciting moment for everyone connected to Hawthorn Medical Centre.
The new health centre is expected to open in autumn 2027.
