NHS Property Services (NHSPS) has delivered the new Sleaford Street Health Centre in Battersea, London.
NHSPS, which provides strategic estates and property services to the NHS, led the healthcare element of the project, including securing funding, acquiring the health-centre unit and managing its fit-out.
VINCI Construction was appointed to carry out the £6.95m fit-out, while the shell and core of the building was delivered as part of the wider Battersea Power Station Phase 4a development.
The facility provides 22 consulting rooms and multiple treatment spaces, replacing Battersea Fields Practice's smaller branch surgery at Thessaly Road.
The health centre has a gross internal area of around 1,868 sqm and forms part of the Nine Elms Vauxhall Health Programme, which is being delivered alongside the wider regeneration of the Nine Elms Vauxhall Opportunity Area.
Purpose-built NHS facility
The new health centre provides Battersea Fields Practice with a larger premises from which to deliver primary care, including face-to-face and virtual appointments.
The additional space also enables community health providers to deliver services locally and gives the practice greater flexibility to expand its services and work with other local health and care organisations.
The health centre was provided within the wider Battersea Power Station Phase 4a development.
Earlier infrastructure planning documents identified the NHS facility as part of the development, with the shell-and-core space due to be handed over to NHSPS before the healthcare fit-out.
The project involved NHSPS, NHS South West London, Wandsworth Council, Battersea Power Station, Peabody and Battersea Fields Practice.
Around £15m has been invested in the health centre, with the majority of the funding provided by Wandsworth Council through contributions collected from local developments.
Healthcare provision alongside regeneration
The Sleaford Street Health Centre is intended to support both existing communities and residents moving into the expanding Nine Elms area.
The wider Nine Elms Vauxhall Opportunity Area includes plans for at least 18,500 new homes, with population growth expected to continue until 2041. The health centre forms part of the infrastructure being delivered to increase local NHS capacity alongside the development.
The new facility replaces Battersea Fields Practice's smaller branch surgery at Thessaly Road, while the practice will continue to provide services from its Austin Road facility.
The project comes as NHSPS prepares for a leadership change, with CEO Martin Steele due to leave the organisation at the end of March 2027 after nine years. Read more about Martin Steele's departure.
