Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust has opened a refurbished ophthalmology facility to offer Aylesbury patients specialist eye care services

Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust has announced the official opening of the newly refurbished ophthalmology facilities at Stoke Mandeville Hospital.

“After a long period of complex planning and project implementation, we have achieved a fantastic outcome and now offer a greater range of ophthalmic services for patients across the county,” said Jonathan Berry, Director for Operations and Planned Care at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust.

The architectural practice IKON Architecture, which delivered the new ophthalmology department, has increased the size of the site by 30%.

This will enable a broader range of treatments and support improved appointment availability for residents across Buckinghamshire.

The upgraded facilities include redesigned waiting areas, additional consulting rooms and improved treatment spaces, all designed to support high-quality, patient-centred care.

The facilities include specialised equipment and facilities for urgent eye conditions, such as age-related macular degeneration unit (AMD).

The Mandeville Wing now houses the region’s first dedicated corneal unit capable of performing corneal cross-linking, a treatment for keratoconus.

Previously, patients with this condition had to be referred to Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in London.

During the opening ceremony for the new ophthalmology department on November 13, patient representatives, operations team and guests toured the new clinical areas.

Nigel Pilkington represented the IKON team at the opening.

Along with the refurbished ophthalmology facilities this year, IKON Architecture was also selected to do a smaller refurbishment scheme for Wycombe Hospital to upgrade patient accommodation and create a new CT-scanner suite.
