Wycombe Hospital in Buckinghamshire has been approved for its recent refurbishment planning application.

Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust and its agent IKON Architecture (also known as IKON Architects) applied back in May, and now the application has been approved.

The proposal will see:

  • Internal alterations and refurbishment to form a single en-suite bedroom with adjoining en-suite and gowning lobby
  • A 2-bed bay room with en-suite
  • A new CT scanner room with ancillary spaces and recovery bay
  • New plant and ductwork to be installed on the existing flat roof
  • New AHU and condensers in an enclosure at ground level to the side of the building
  • A new MVHR unit is to be installed on the existing flat roof

IKON has a specialism in delivering highly serviced buildings like healthcare facilities, laboratories and pharmaceutical facilities within the public and private sectors.

The company has been involved in projects such as the Airedale Centre for Mental Health in Bradford, as well as being part of a recladding scheme and building a new operating theatre at a private healthcare provider in Glasgow.

The hospital is known to have an ageing infrastructure, with the Trust saying it is “reaching the end of its life” in 2023.

The Care Quality Commission rated the hospital’s safety as “requires improvement”, and the Trust states it needs over £80m for major repairs.

At the moment, it costs about £2m per year just to keep scaffolding up and employ contractors to do essential maintenance.
