IKON Architecture has completed work to refurbish the intensive treatment unit 2 (ITU 2) at St Helier Hospital site, following Gateway 2 approval last August.
Gateway 2 is the NHS project approval stage where a business case and outline plans are assessed before detailed design and construction can proceed
Principal contractor Russell Cawberry and the design team led by IKON, including Tania Kosma and Flora Teng as architects, worked closely with consultants from Wooster Jeffs Associates (M&E), Hunters: Architects, Building Consultants and Civils & Structures (structural engineering), and GB Compliance Ltd (fire engineering).
The refurbished ITU 2 incorporates modern clinical layouts, upgraded services infrastructure and compliant fire and life safety provisions, supporting the Trust’s ambitions to deliver fit‑for‑purpose critical care environments for the local population.
Completion of this phase also supports broader estates resilience initiatives across the Trust as it continues to address long‑standing infrastructure challenges across its estate.
Formal documentation for the next stage of assurance, the Gateway 3 application, has now been submitted, enabling the Epsom and St Helier University Hospital Trust to progress with assurance activities even though occupancy of the newly refurbished spaces can proceed ahead of final Gateway 3 approval.
Gateway 3 is the approval stage for detailed design and planning before full construction starts.
While final approval of the Gateway 3 application is underway, the Trust has confirmed that the refurbished areas are safe for clinical use and operational occupancy.
Project teams delivered the complex clinical refurbishment works within a live hospital environment.
Other IKON projects
In addition to St Helier, IKON was recently appointed to design a new paediatric and adult audiology department at Lister Hospital for East and North Hertfordshire Teaching NHS Trust, focusing on a calming, patient‑centred environment.
The practice also worked with Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust on a small approved refurbishment at Wycombe Hospital, updating clinical spaces, including bedrooms and imaging support areas.
IKON also led the refurbishment of ophthalmology facilities at Stoke Mandeville Hospital’s Mandeville Wing, expanding the specialist eye unit to provide more treatment capacity and improved patient spaces.
