MTX Contracts has started construction on a major new diagnostics and treatment centre as part of the wider Llantrisant Health Park development in Wales.
“We are extremely proud to be partnering with the health boards to develop this exciting new facility, which represents a major step forward for healthcare in South East Wales,” said David Hartley, MTX Managing Director.
The Welsh Government approved funding for Phase 1 of the scheme in February, enabling the development of a Community Diagnostics Hub that will support regional collaboration and expand access to testing and treatment services.
The wider Llantrisant Health Park will transform the former British Airways Avionics Engineering site near Cardiff into a healthcare campus, comprising approximately 17,300 sqm of new-build space across three buildings.
Phase 1 focuses on the 7,500 sqm diagnostics hub being delivered by MTX that is set over three floors.
The ground floor will house MRI, CT, ultrasound and X-ray facilities, as well as endoscopy procedure rooms and associated clinical services.
The upper levels will include plant space and a dedicated training area, featuring an Endoscopy Academy designed to support regional workforce development.
External works and landscaping also form part of the initial phase.
MTX has been engaged from an early stage under a pre-construction services agreement, working with clinical teams and designers to optimise the scheme.
The company said it is applying Modern Methods of Construction to accelerate delivery and improve efficiency, while ensuring the facility meets the operational requirements of healthcare staff and patients.
The Llantrisant Health Park is expected to play a central role in strengthening diagnostics and treatment capacity across the region as the NHS continues to address demand and modernise its estate.
The Health Park will also support regional collaboration between Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board, Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, and Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.
Other Wales projects by MTX
At the end of last month, MTX also broke ground on a six-storey building at Wycombe Hospital.
The centre will provide cardiology care, stroke-care, operating theatres and critical care in the future phases of the project once further funding has been secured.
An Endoscopy Department is expected to open in 2027.
The Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust submitted plans for the £20m redevelopment of Wycombe Hospital last October, and MTX was chosen to deliver the six-storey building in November.
Planning permission for the new development was granted in December subject to a small number of pre-commencement conditions.
MTX took possession of the Phase 5 site in early January, allowing mobilisation and pre-commencement activities to begin.
Key civil works will formally start this May to prepare the site for the new building, which will be created using 298 precisely engineered structural steel modules factory-manufactured off site.
