Community Health Partnerships has invested £2.2m into the facility in Hull to redevelop underused space and relocate a local GP practice outgrowing its current facility

Underused space at The Calvert Centre in Hull is to be redeveloped and used by the GP surgery, Kingston Health Practice.

In a notice to its patients and the public, Kingston Health Practice called their previous residence “quite old” and “no longer fit for purpose”.

The notice also cited accessibility issues and a lack of space.

Now, the NHS-owned primary care estate development and management expert, Community Health Partnerships (CHP), are working in partnership with the practice and Humber and North Yorkshire ICB to support the remodelling project.

The remodel will be a purpose-built surgery, which will sit 0.8 miles away from the original practice.

CHP are investing £2.2m into the project, working with Citycare (LIFTCo), Sewell Construction, and Sewell Advisory (project management).

The project will enable Kingston Health Practice to relocate into the health centre, expanding from 8 to 10 clinical rooms and delivering over 13,000 additional primary care appointments each year.

Tim Wigglesworth, Chief Executive of Citycare (LIFTCo), said: “The better utilisation of the health centre is welcome and represents a great example of the work we undertake jointly with system partners to deliver improved health outcomes for the city.”

The move supports the shift towards preventative, community-based care in line with the NHS’s 10-Year Health Plan.

The project has reached financial close and is now in the next phase of delivery, with the remodelling expected to be finished in the autumn.

Alongside the enhanced space, the facility has been designed to support GPs, nurses, and healthcare professionals to work more closely together.

This will improve coordination of care and support the delivery of integrated services aligned with the Humber and North Yorkshire ICS Primary Care Delivery Plan.

The new facilities will also provide an improved working environment for staff, supporting recruitment, retention, and workforce growth.

This project is a key part of CHP’s ongoing work to improve LIFT healthcare facilities across the country. LIFT stands for Local Improvement Finance Trust. It is a massive Public-Private Partnership (PPP) programme established to design, build, fund, and manage modern primary care and community healthcare

Dr Jane Fitch, Regional Director for North East, at Community Health Partnerships, said: “CHP’s £2.2m investment in The Calvert Centre shows how we have worked with NHS partners to make better use of the LIFT estate while improving access to care for patients.

“By transforming underused space into modern clinical facilities for Kingston Health, we’re increasing capacity and supporting more integrated, community-based services in line with the NHS 10-year plan.”
