Hertfordshire mental health unit complete

First phase of new development draws to a close

The first phase of Kingfisher Court, a new mental health and learning disabilities centre designed by P+HS Architects, is now complete.

Constructed on the site of the former Harperbury Hospital in Hertfordshire, the new facility will deliver significant improvements to mental health services across Hertfordshire.

The 86-bed adult inpatient mental health facility has five wards and includes provision for frail functional, as well as LDU clients.

Set within a tranquil woodland landscape, the development blends well with its surroundings and the natural setting is reflected in the choice of materials. Wooden cladding and red cedar wood shingles minimise the impact of the development, while the use of copper highlights the entrance and zinc provides variation at first-floor level.

The design includes active and passive courtyards, as well as larger open spaces for sport and horticultural activities. Windows are generous and numerous, providing ample natural light to the interior. Extensive use of colour and artwork simplifies wayfinding and contributes to the outstanding therapeutic qualities of the internal spaces.

Despite the size of the development - over 8000sq m - the design feels personal and far removed from a large institution or hospital.

Phase 2 is due for completion at the end of July and will be fully operational in September.
