Work starts on Hungerford extra care housing scheme
Leadbitter begins construction of 74 homes for Sovereign Housing Association
Work has begun on the creation of an extra care housing scheme in Hungerford.
The Leadbitter Group has moved onto the site at The Priory to begin construction of 74 new affordable homes for over-55s on behalf of Sovereign Housing Association.
The development will consist of two blocks, one comprising 28 apartments for over-55s and the other offering 46 extra care units.
Due for completion in the second half of 2013, the facility will also have a catering-standard kitchen, kiosk shop and a hairdressing salon.
The development replaces 33 flats that were on the old Priory and Platt Court sites and has benefited from investment from the Homes and Communities Agency and West Berkshire Council.
Prior to work starting on the site, Leadbitter has rehoused a colony of common pipistrelle, soprano pipistrelle and brown long-eared bat colonies in a new purpose-built barn, allowing the demolition of 40 garages to begin.
West Berkshire Council’s executive councillor for housing, Roger Croft, said: “Demographically, there is only going to be an increase in demand for this type of accommodation in the district over the coming years, so this scheme is very welcome.”
