The Cheshire-based healthcare construction specialist has been appointed to transform a former aerospace site into a diagnostic and treatment campus that serves three Welsh health boards

MTX Contracts has secured a pre-construction services agreement to lead the design and construction of a community diagnostics hub at Llantrisant Health Park in South East Wales.

The scheme will regenerate the former British Airways Avionics Engineering site near Cardiff, creating a modern healthcare campus that spans approximately 17,300 sqm across three buildings.

Phase one, now approved for funding by the Welsh Government, will focus on a 7,500 sqm diagnostics hub, with construction expected to begin later this year.

Advanced diagnostics and regional training

Set over three floors, the new hub will provide a comprehensive range of diagnostic and treatment services.

The ground floor will house MRI, CT, ultrasound and plain film X-ray suites, alongside dedicated endoscopy procedure rooms, follow-up screening and clinical services.

The second floor will accommodate plant rooms and a specialist training facility, including an Endoscopy Academy designed to serve as a high-quality regional NHS training centre for endoscopists.

External works will include landscaping, upgrades to existing roads and car parking, and compliance landscaping to meet SAB requirements.

Early contractor involvement

Under the PCSA model, MTX will work alongside clinical teams during the design phase to optimise efficiency, functionality and patient experience before the main construction contract is finalised.

The company will apply its Modern Methods of Construction expertise to the scheme, using off-site manufactured steel-framed components to reduce programme time, minimise disruption and improve sustainability outcomes.

“Combining our healthcare expertise with Modern Methods of Construction, we are developing a design that will deliver an outstanding asset for patients and clinicians alike,” said David Hartley, Managing Director at MTX.

Regional collaboration to cut waiting times

Llantrisant Health Park is being delivered through collaboration between Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board, Cardiff and Vale University Health Board and Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.

The facility aims to improve access to diagnostics and treatment across the region, enhance service delivery and establish a centre of excellence for high-volume, low-complexity orthopaedic and day/outpatient general surgery.

Through its continued refinement of MMC and Design for Manufacture and Assembly principles, MTX says it can reduce on-site construction time by up to 50% and cut waste by up to 60%, enabling faster, greener and more cost-effective delivery.

Phase one of Llantrisant Health Park is expected to play a pivotal role in reshaping diagnostic and elective care provision across South East Wales.
