Hunters has completed the refurbishment of Glyn Ward at the Royal Hospital for Neuro-Disability (RHN) in Putney, improving the clinical environment, patient privacy and accessibility.
The project was designed by Hunters and involved the redevelopment of the first floor within the hospital's historic setting.
Founded in 1863, the hospital contains a number of retained historic features, including decorative ceilings, fireplaces, large timber sash windows and the building's original walls and structure.
The refurbishment has been designed around these features while upgrading the ward to meet modern clinical requirements.
The redesigned ward has a clearer internal arrangement, alongside improved staff and clinical storage areas and a greater number of single bedrooms.
The number of bedspaces has been reduced to improve accessibility for residents, while bedrooms have been positioned along the building's external walls to provide greater access to natural light and external views.
The changes also support patient privacy and contemporary infection control requirements.
A new sensory room has been introduced as the centrepiece of the ward. The space is designed to provide sensory stimulation for residents and can also be adapted for use as a more social area.
Hunters said the refurbishment aimed to combine conservation of the existing building with improvements to its healthcare function.
“Working with Hunters has been great. They are knowledgeable about the organisational requirements, and were able to overcome them in a positive way,” said Derek Bannister, Head of Estates and Capital Projects for RHND.
The Royal Hospital for Neuro-Disability provides specialist services for adults with complex neuro-disability, including rehabilitation and continuing care.
