The £35m project at City Hospital, part of Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, has reached a new milestone. Groundworks are now underway, with the installation of a 35.5-metre tower crane to help build the elective surgery hub.
The project involves extending an existing building and constructing a new three-storey facility at City Hospital.
Once completed, the elective hub will feature three new operating theatres, 24 in-patient beds, and 18 day-case beds to support elective surgeries.

The new facility will replace it with theatres, day beds, a patient reception area, and improved staff amenities, including new office and seminar spaces, rest areas, and changing rooms.

The funding comes from the national Targeted Investment Fund (TIF), designed to tackle patient waiting lists and cancelled surgeries caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing operational pressures.
Duncan Hanslow, NUH Programme director for Reconfiguration said: “The new hub will allow us to continue to reduce the backlog of people in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire waiting for planned operations, as well as minimising the risk of cancellations.
“It will also provide a new, more efficient way of working for our elective theatres, as they will be located together within a purpose-built setting.
“We have worked extensively with stakeholders and colleagues across NUH to help design the new facilities. In addition to supporting the delivery of high-quality, safe, efficient, and effective care for patients, the hub will also provide an excellent working space for staff.”
