New Hospital Programme: IHP’s £105m NHS rehabilitation centre takes shape

Published: 2-Apr-2025

IHP has made significant progress with the NHS National Rehabilitation Centre build, with the installation of a grand staircase, modern en-suite bathrooms, and solar panels on the roof

The first NHS National Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) is rapidly taking shape, with the grand feature staircase, modern en-suite bathrooms, and solar panels now all in place, as IHP continues to lead the construction.

This follows Integrated Health Projects (IHP), a joint venture between VINCI Building and Sir Robert McAlpine, topping out on the project in April 2024.

These developments mark a significant milestone for the project, which has been in the works for a decade and is now set to transform rehabilitation across the UK.

As construction continues at pace, the centre is on track to welcome its first patients in the summer of 2025.

With a budget of £105 million, the NRC is part of the New Hospital Programme

The rehabilitation centre was designed by Ryder, a UK-based architectural firm.

Located near Loughborough, the 70-bed, purpose-built rehabilitation centre is being run by Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.

With a budget of £105 million, the NRC is part of the New Hospital Programme, which aims to revolutionise healthcare facilities in the country.

Over 200 tradespeople are currently working on the site each day, ensuring that the build progresses smoothly.

Inside the building, the impressive staircase has been installed in the main atrium, where patients will first enter the centre.

The building’s energy efficiency is a key focus, with solar panels now installed on the roof

Bedrooms are beginning to take shape as bedheads are fitted and en-suite bathrooms are completed.

Flooring is being laid, and miles of wiring are being installed to power the centre’s many services.

The building’s energy efficiency is a key focus, with solar panels now installed on the roof, set to help power the facility alongside air source heat pumps.

The outer structure of the building is also taking form, with the metal framework nearing completion and the final rainscreen cladding set to be added soon.

The site, part of the Stanford Hall Rehabilitation Estate near Loughborough, was carefully chosen to bring together two centres of excellence

Ryan McCormack, Head of Commercial and Construction for the NRC, said: “With fewer than six months to go before we welcome our first patients, it’s exciting to see how quickly the interior of the building is changing on an almost daily basis,” he said. “It’s been a pleasure to see this incredible building emerge from the ground up, and these next few months are when it will all suddenly come to life as more and more of the fixtures and fittings are installed and finishes are complete, ready for our very first patients.”

The site, part of the Stanford Hall Rehabilitation Estate near Loughborough, was carefully chosen to bring together two centres of excellence: the NRC and the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre, which opened in 2018.

This strategic location aims to set new standards in rehabilitation, not only for the UK but on a global scale.

The centre is also being built with advanced digital capabilities in mind

Designed using modern construction methods, the NRC will be a highly energy-efficient facility, supporting the NHS's goal to reach Carbon Net Zero by 2045.

The centre is also being built with advanced digital capabilities in mind, incorporating a Smart Hospital design that will allow the integration of cutting-edge technologies in the future.

As work continues, the NHS National Rehabilitation Centre is set to become a flagship facility, offering state-of-the-art rehabilitation services and advancing the future of patient care in the UK.
