Galliford Try’s Healthcare business unit has completed a major refurbishment and extension of the Stonebow Unit in Hereford for Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust.
Procured via the ProCure22 framework, the project forms part of the national Eliminating Dormitories Programme, which aims to improve privacy, dignity, and safety for mental health inpatients across the UK.
Designed by Design Buro, the new environment also features adaptable, interlinked wards, anti-ligature fixtures, and fixed furniture to enhance safety without compromising on comfort.
Completed in October 2024, the £11m scheme involved refurbishing and extending the existing inpatient facility for working age and older adults, while also providing a base for several local community mental health teams.

Notably, the project was delivered while maintaining full bed occupancy, with patients moving only once into their improved accommodation.
The redesign created 39 single, en-suite bedrooms on the ground floor, providing greater privacy and easier access to landscaped gardens, known to support therapeutic recovery.
In line with the Modernising the Mental Health Act 2018, the project eliminated outdated dormitory accommodation and introduced interchangeable bedrooms, allowing staff to tailor spaces to meet the varied needs of adults, older adults, and patients with dementia.
The refurbishment also prioritises staff welfare, with improved first-floor facilities designed to support healthcare professionals working in a demanding environment.
Recognised by the construction industry, the project received a bronze award at the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) National Site Awards.
