Construction firm Galliford Try has handed over the Stonebow mental health unit to Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust

Galliford Try, a UK-based construction company, has completed the £11m refurbishment and extension of the Stonebow Unit.

The new project has been completed for the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust.

The project has enhanced facilities for adult, older adult, and dementia patients.

The new refurbishment and extension provides 39 single en-suite bedrooms facilities on the ground floor to enable patients easy access to the gardens and to create room on the first floor for staff welfare.

Designed by Design Buro, a UK-based architecture firm, the refurbishment incorporated adaptable, interlinked wards tailored to patients' needs aligning with the Modernising the Mental Health Act 2018 to phase out dormitory-style accommodations.

The project also received a bronze award from the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) National Site Awards, which acknowledge outstanding projects that show dedication to fostering and promoting positive changes in the construction industry.

Laura Hodgetts, Health Director for Galliford Try, said: “We are delighted to see the successful completion of the Stonebow Unit project, which not only ensures all patients have access to outdoor space but also enhances patient privacy and dignity through 100% single en-suite room accommodation.

“This refurbishment marks a significant step forward in providing a supportive environment that prioritises both patient needs and staff welfare, aligning with contemporary mental health standards.”
