Laing O’Rourke, a UK-based construction company, has begun pre-construction works for Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital.
Laing O’Rourke was first selected to be the main contractor back in August 2023.
Excavators are currently removing 18,000 cubic metres of soil from the former car park area, paving the way for crucial archaeological work that will continue through to autumn.
This initial phase marks the start of a transformative development, with the main construction set to begin in 2026, promising to enhance cancer research and treatment facilities in the region.

The project is also halfway through the fourth RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) design stage.
During this stage, Laing O’Rourke is looking at the technical detail of the design, such as the fixtures and fittings in the building, the placement of signs for navigating the hospital, and the landscaping for the central outside space.
This RIBA stage also enables Laing O’Rourke to ensure it is compliant with Building Regulations and the requirements of the new Building Safety Act.
Beyond design and construction, in January it was confirmed that this project will be in wave one of the Government’s New Hospital Programme
Beyond design and construction, in January it was confirmed that this project will be in wave one of the Government’s New Hospital Programme, which means the hospital remains on track to be built by 2029.
Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s Full Business Case is also being finalised before submission to NHS England and the Government later this year.
Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital (CCRH) will be a new specialist hospital that will treat patients for cancer and non-cancer haematological conditions, such as Sickle Cell, TTP, and Haemophilia.
