Laing O’Rourke has reported that its delivery of a new National Grid substation at Margam, South Wales, has generated £1.8m in social value as works continue to upgrade the existing site and construct a new facility.
The Margam Connection Project was launched to expand electricity infrastructure in South Wales to support decarbonisation work at Tata Steel’s Port Talbot site and increase capacity on the regional power network.
The contractor said the project has so far supported 51 people, including 12 local job creations, alongside 18 roles filled by individuals who had previously faced barriers to employment.
More than 350 people have taken part in careers support and community engagement activities linked to the project.
Skills and outreach activity has included school workshops, careers sessions, work experience placements and apprenticeships delivered in partnership with Bridgend College.
Community activity has also included playground improvements, volunteering at local centres, support for sports clubs and donations to local organisations.
Separately, the project recently achieved an “Excellent” rating following a visit from the Considerate Constructors Scheme.
