Arcadis Architecture & Urbanism has completed two major health infrastructure projects in South Wales, marking a significant advance in the region’s efforts to improve access to care, reduce travel times for patients and embed wellbeing into community settings.
The global design, engineering and consultancy firm led the architectural, landscape and interior design for the £38m Velindre @ Nevill Hall Radiotherapy Unit in Abergavenny, which opened in July 2025.
Arcadis also steered the architectural delivery of the 19 Hills Health & Wellbeing Centre in Newport, a £28m Welsh Government–funded scheme to enhance community-based health.
“The completion of both healthcare projects underscores our commitment to innovation and excellence,” said Andrew Street, Principal and UK Healthcare Practice Group Manager at Arcadis Architecture & Urbanism.
Velindre @ Nevill Hall Radiotherapy unit
Commissioned by Aneurin Bevan University Health Board and delivered with Kier Construction, the Velindre at Nevill Hall Radiotherapy Unit extends specialist cancer treatment into South East Wales, significantly reducing the need for patients to travel long distances for radiotherapy.
The new facility incorporates two linear accelerators, a CT scanner, and a medical physics department at ground level.
Staff areas and engineering workshops occupy the upper floor. Patient-facing areas, including waiting zones and consultation rooms, are positioned to maximise natural light and views towards the Blorenge and the Brecon Beacons National Park.
19 Hills Health & Wellbeing Centre
The newly opened 19 Hills Health & Wellbeing Centre in Newport integrates clinical treatment with wellbeing and community connection.
Delivered in partnership with Kier Construction, the centre provides dental facilities, clinical rooms, agile workspaces for community health teams, community connector areas and dedicated wellbeing provision.
The design supports a preventative care approach, making it easier for residents to access health services locally and for staff teams to operate flexibly across services.
Arcadis’ specialist healthcare design expertise helped shape the centre as a welcoming, adaptable community hub rather than a traditional clinical building.
“We’re delighted to see both developments brought to life through thoughtful, innovative design. Arcadis Architecture & Urbanism have helped us create spaces that truly reflect the needs of our communities and support the delivery of high-quality, compassionate care,” said Nicola Prygodzicz, Chief Executive of Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.
