Tilbury Douglas has completed construction of a major upgrade to the urgent and emergency care facilities at Arrowe Park Hospital in Wirral.
The project, delivered on behalf of Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, has expanded and remodelled the hospital’s emergency care provision as part of a wider programme to improve patient flow and capacity.
The £28m scheme was originally announced in 2021 and involved the redevelopment of the existing Emergency Department alongside the adjacent Urgent Treatment Centre.
The completed facilities include a new ambulance drop-off area, dedicated adult and paediatric emergency care departments, additional staff workspaces and wellbeing areas, and facilities to support the treatment of major trauma and mental health patients.
The redesigned department brings urgent and emergency care services together through a single-entry approach, with the layout intended to improve patient journeys, increase ambulance capacity and provide greater privacy.
The project also provides modern clinical, training and staff wellbeing spaces as part of the wider redevelopment of the hospital's urgent and emergency care provision.
Tilbury Douglas was appointed as the primary construction and engineering contractor for the scheme, with Day Architectural providing design services.
Construction began in 2022. In 2024, the construction company handed over the advanced resuscitation area as part of the upgrade.
The completion marks the delivery of one of the largest investments in Arrowe Park Hospital since it opened in 1982.
