Pilgrim Hospital secures £23 million funding for energy efficiency upgrades

The latest round of government funding will enable Pilgrim Hospital to replace fossil fuel-based systems with electrically powered heating and hot water, advancing its commitment to sustainability and net-zero targets

Pilgrim Hospital in Boston, part of Lincolnshire Community and Hospitals NHS Group, has been awarded £23 million to undertake significant energy infrastructure improvements.

This move is part of the UK Government’s Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS).

This investment will support the hospital’s transition to cleaner power and bolster its critical energy systems.

The funding will enable Pilgrim Hospital to install an electrically powered heating and hot water system across the site, substantially reducing its dependence on fossil fuels.

This upgrade represents a major step towards modernising the hospital’s energy use and enhancing sustainability.

The scheme, managed by Salix Finance on behalf of the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, forms part of a wider government initiative to decarbonise public sector buildings.

Mike Parkhill, Group Chief Estates and Facilities Officer at Lincolnshire Community and Hospitals NHS Group, emphasised the importance of local action in meeting national climate goals: “This funding brings us closer to achieving our net-zero target by 2040, while also reinforcing our commitment to provide modern and more energy-efficient environments for our patients and staff.”

Parkhill added that the investment would not only reduce carbon emissions but also support a more sustainable future for the Boston community. The group is also preparing bids for similar projects across other hospital sites in Lincolnshire.

This latest investment builds on previous multi-million pound works at Pilgrim Hospital, including the development of a new emergency department which incorporated greener technologies and sustainability measures.

Ian Rodger, Director of Public Sector Decarbonisation at Salix, commented on the significance of the funding: “Reducing carbon emissions is key in the fight against climate change. This funding will help the hospital site achieve its net zero ambitions and improve the comfort of buildings for patients, staff and visitors.”

The Lincolnshire Community and Hospitals NHS Group collaborated closely with the Carbon and Energy Fund (CEF) in preparing the funding application and developing future plans.

This award represents a significant opportunity for the UK healthcare construction sector to contribute to energy efficiency and sustainability within hospital infrastructure, supporting both environmental and patient care goals.
