Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals will receive over £3 million from the Department of Health and Social Care’s Estates Safety Fund to modernise essential infrastructure

Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has secured over £3 million in government funding to support essential estates and infrastructure upgrades, as part of a national initiative to enhance NHS facilities.

The Department of Health and Social Care confirmed on 30 May that Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals will receive £3.1 million from the newly announced £750 million Estates Safety Fund.

The fund, part of a wider £1.2 billion government package for hospitals and schools under the Plan for Change, aims to address critical maintenance needs and improve safety and infrastructure across the public sector estate.

The funding allocated to Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals will enable the Trust to carry out a series of modernisation projects across its sites.

Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has secured over £3 million in government funding

These include upgrading and replacing lifts, essential roof replacements, and the installation of new building management systems.

Additionally, critical ventilation improvements will be made in key clinical areas such as operating theatres, alongside the introduction of a new nurse call system to enhance patient safety and operational efficiency.

Daniel Moore, Chief Operating Officer and Deputy Chief Executive for Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals, welcomed the announcement, stating: “Like many other trusts across the country, we know that there is a significant need for investment into our hospital estate due to its age and condition. I am delighted that the Trust has been able to secure this vital funding which will support us to upgrade and modernise the most critical areas of our estate and infrastructure.

“By investing we can ensure our buildings are fit for purpose, provide a safe environment to deliver patient care, and support the future delivery of strong and sustainable healthcare services for communities in Halton and Warrington.”

By modernising facilities and reducing maintenance liabilities, the projects are expected to deliver carbon reduction benefits

In addition to addressing immediate infrastructure needs, the improvement works will contribute to the Trust’s long-term sustainability goals.

By modernising facilities and reducing maintenance liabilities, the projects are expected to deliver carbon reduction benefits and generate operational cost savings that can be reinvested into frontline patient services.

The Estates Safety Fund will support a broad range of schemes nationally, covering building repairs, infrastructure upgrades, and safety improvements, aimed at creating safer, more efficient environments for patients and staff while reducing the risk of service disruption.

For the UK healthcare construction sector, this investment represents a continued commitment to addressing the backlog of maintenance issues across NHS estates, whilst promoting greener, more resilient healthcare facilities for the future.
