‘Forget Me Not’ installation honours those who have donated organs to save lives

The Royal Albert Edward Infirmary in Wigan is now home to a breathtaking new organ donation sculpture known as ‘Forget Me Not’.

The archway is composed of intertwined shimmering foliage, vibrant butterflies, and larger-than-life forget-me-nots crafted from stainless steel.

And its grand scale serves as a welcoming beacon at the hospital entrance, inviting visitors to venture beneath to read the information plaque and reflect on the significance of organ donation while sitting on the integrated bench.

Designed by Hospital Art Studio, the choice of forget-me-nots and butterflies carries deep symbolism and significance as forget-me-not flowers traditionally signify remembrance, particularly for those we have lost, while butterflies embody the powerful concept of metamorphosis and symbolise the transformative process that organ donor recipients undergo.

In addition to the sculpture, individual forget-me-not mementos were created to honour organ donor families.

These keepsakes were awarded personally to the families during the artwork’s official unveiling.

Together with the sculpture, the mementos pay tribute to the selflessness of organ donors who have saved and improved the lives of others through their essential contributions.

Vikki Lloyd, a specialist nurse for organ donation, said: “The memorial looks amazing!

“It really stands out as you walk around the corner, and in the sunlight this morning, it looks stunning.”
