The impact of good design on mental health patients came under the spotlight this week with the announcement of the winners of the 2015 Design in Mental Health Awards.
Revealed during a ceremony following the first day of the annual Design in Mental Health Conference and Exhibition, a total of six awards were presented across five categories.
The Award for Product Innovation of the Year was presented to Recornect for The Cowall.
A communication wall, it incorporates the GRASP software platform in combination with the largest interactive screen available for medium and high-security care settings.
A unique feature of the Cowall is the so-called glow wall option. Through a special technique coloured light is injected into the room, while patients are still able to use the touchscreen.
Shortlisted in the category were Teal Furniture for the Roku matching rotationally-moulded chair and table collection; Britplas for its Safevent Security Fencing; and Primera for its Life-Line anti-barricade lockset.
The judges picked two winners for the Service User Experience Award – ProCure 21+ for its Repeatable Mental Health Bedrooms; and Gilling Dod Architects for The Lighthouse.
Also shortlisted were Medical Architecture for Roker and Mowbray wards; and Hertfordshire Partnership NHS Trust for Kingfisher Court.
Hertfordshire Partnership NHS Trust’s design team from P+HS Architects also picked up the Project of the Year Award for Kingfisher Court. Shortlisted in that category were Medical Architecture for Hopewood; PM Devereux for the Tier 4 CAMHS Unit; and Gilling Dod Architects for The Harbour.
And there were two special awards for outstanding service to the industry. The Design Champion of the Year Award was presented to Rosemary Jennsen, a well-known architect and member of Architects for Health.
The Award for Services to Mental Health was won by Marion Janner of Star Wards, a partnership aimed at improving mental health inpatient care.
Kingfisher Court (P+HS Architects) won Hertfordshire Partnership NHS Trust the Project of the Year Award
