New Walsall Manor Hospital scoops award for Skanska
THE pioneering approach to building the £170m new Walsall Manor Hospital has been recognised in a leading awards scheme. Skanska, the company behind the new building, put a special focus on environmental issues during its three-and-a-half years on site. Now the project team has received a major commendation from the prestigious Business Commitment to the Environment (BCE) Leadership Award scheme. The accolade showed it was one of the UK's greenest contractors, with its campaign philosophy The Environment - Own it proving such a success at Walsall that it will now be rolled out to future construction projects. Steven Davis, environmental manager at Skanska, said: "We are not only proud of building a new Walsall Manor Hospital for the local community and wider region, but also of doing it in the right way. Our campaign has resulted in no environmental incidents, no complaints, suppliers demonstrating a pro-active approach to environment and waste and being able to share best practice with the local education and construction community." Trust chief executive, Richard Kirby, added: "Patients and staff deserve the best facilities so we can deliver caring and quality healthcare. Our new hospital development is a welcome addition to the services we provide here and I congratulate Skanska on delivering a fine building and on its success in the award scheme."
