Mace Group and Integrated Health Projects have completed a resuscitation area as part of a major renovation project at Manchester Royal Infirmary

Mace Group, a UK-based construction company, has completed the first phase of a major renovation project with the opening of a new resuscitation area at Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI).

Integrated Health Projects (IHP) serves as the P22 Principal Supply Chain Partner.

The new resuscitation (resus) area, which took approximately 18 months to complete, boasts a more streamlined layout, state-of-the-art equipment, and increased capacity, expanding from six to ten resuscitation bays.

Enhanced facilities for improved patient care

Designed with patient needs in mind, the new resus area was developed with input from clinical staff to ensure dignity, privacy, and noise reduction, while still allowing oversight and observation of critically unwell patients.

The expanded space in each bay provides a more accommodating environment for multidisciplinary teams and essential medical equipment.

New operating theatres will be built on the second floor of the facility

Alongside the improved layout, the area features updated equipment, including advanced monitoring systems and new trolleys, enhancing the care provided to patients.

These enhancements will offer nursing staff the best possible environment to care for patients until they are stable enough to be moved to intensive care, another ward, or transferred to a different hospital.

Project RED: Transforming emergency services

The renovation, known as ‘Project RED’ (Renovation of Emergency Department), aims to enhance MRI’s services as an adult Major Trauma Centre for Greater Manchester.

In addition to the completion of Phase 1, which includes the new Emergency Department Resus area, future phases will see the creation of six new operating theatres.

These theatres will support MRI’s role as one of the regional centres for specialist surgery in Manchester.

The next stage of the project will involve the demolition of the old resus department and the construction of expanded Majors, Minors, and Triage areas within the Emergency Department.

Additionally, new operating theatres will be built on the second floor of the facility.
