Buildings services engineering specialist, Steven Hunt & Associates, has completed the mechanical and electrical design for a £2.9m angiography unit at Salford Royal Hospital.
The project builds on an established relationship between the hospital and the company, which saw Steven Hunt design the services installation for Salford Royal’s award-winning suite of operating theatres last year.
The new angiography unit has been created thanks to a refurbishment scheme designed by DAY Architectural in the hospital’s Turnberg Building, providing a twin interventional angiography suite with outpatient theatre capabilities.
The new unit comprises two treatment rooms/theatres adjoined by a central anaesthetic room. The suite also includes a prep/lay-up room, scrub rooms, a control room and a technical room.
The complex services design involved a completely new plant room to service the unit and a new electrical substation, which has been specified to allow for further improvements at the hospital, futureproofing Salford Royal’s electrical infrastructure.
The extremely-shallow ceiling voids meant that all services had to be installed in the floor voids of the floor above, presenting design challenges for the team as these had to be routed around a congested network of existing services.
The project also included provision two new ventilation units, providing 15 air changes per hour for each of the treatment rooms/theatres, in compliance with HTM 301, along with a new chiller unit.
Steven Hunt also designed the unit’s uninterrupted power supply (UPS) and isolated power supply (IPS) systems and all the containment required for the scanning equipment, which was installed by the manufacturer, Toshiba.
