DAY Architectural has won “New Build Project of the Year” at the IHEEM Awards for its Greater Manchester Major Trauma Hospital

The £70m Greater Manchester Major Trauma Hospital (GMMTH) accommodates the first hybrid major trauma theatre in the UK and features the UK’s first direct-level access helipad, which will reduce patient transfer times from 20 minutes to 90 seconds.

It comprises five theatres, including a new state-of-the-art RAPTOR theatre, three 24-bed in-patient wards, a 16-bed surgical triage unit, a 12-bay enhanced care unit, MRI, CT and X-ray areas.

Designed to deliver optimal patient management and collaborative clinician working, the facility is part of the Government’s Health Infrastructure Plan delivering 48 hospitals by 2030.

Salford accommodates 8m people across 5,500 sqm and GMMTH is set to receive 90% of all major trauma patients in Greater Manchester.

A landmark facility delivered partly through lockdown, GMMTH is situated on a highly-constrained site.

Expected to service, each year, 1,400 patients and receive 100 helicopter landings, GMMTH has the facilities and capacity to accommodate people living in the Pennines and Peak District, too.

It comprises five theatres, including a new state-of-the-art RAPTOR theatre

Purpose-built for the sickest patients, who are literally facing life-or-death situations, GMMTH has been designed to deliver ultimate efficiencies, getting people to the clinicians, advanced medical equipment and care needed as fast as possible.

Thoroughly-considered features, such as large windows and patient rooms strategically located on the outer perimeter, ensure natural light is ample, enhancing patient mood and recovery time.

Objectives

GMMTH’s key aims are to:
● Deliver enhanced major trauma care
● Improve patient outcomes

And it:

  • Includes innovative design from the ground up, with co-location of key services for major trauma patient management
  • Supports collaborative working between MFT/NCA clinicians, NW Ambulance and Air Ambulance services
  • Delivers best practice model of care and consultant-led senior decision-making 24/7

Outcomes

  • 600 NCA staff transferred into GMMTH, recruiting 286 additional full-time clinical / non-clinical staff
  • £13.2m of local economic value back into Salford’s community (12% over target)
  • 1,500 apprentice weeks completed, over the targeted 500, by 23 apprentices
  • 83% of total construction spent with the local supply chain, 32% within Salford
  • Delivered BREEAM Excellent / Low Carbon initiatives equating to a 2,388,895 kg CO2 carbon saving

In summary

GMMTH has achieved several UK firsts to provide an unparallelled operational environment, i.e. RAPTOR Hybrid Operating Theatre and direct-level access helipad.

Extensive consultation and meticulous planning culminated in the delivery of a unique facility that will transform major trauma care. Innovative design ensures maximum efficiencies throughout the six-storey, 10,100 sqm building in order to facilitate best-practice care.

Put simply, if there’s ever a place to suffer a life-threatening injury, it’s Greater Manchester.
