Kier and CPMG have commenced work on a major new diagnostics development at King’s Mill Hospital in Nottinghamshire

Kier Construction has officially begun work on a new, purpose-built MRI facility at King’s Mill Hospital in Nottinghamshire.

Commissioned by Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and funded by NHS England, the development will modernise diagnostic services for patients across the region.

Designed by international architecture practice CPMG, the facility will house two state-of-the-art MRI scanners, replacing ageing equipment, including a temporary mobile unit, with space reserved for a third scanner to meet future demand.

Scheduled to open in 2026, the building will improve capacity, reduce waiting times, and offer a more efficient, patient-centred environment.

The project was marked by a ground-breaking ceremony attended by Sherwood Forest Hospitals’ Acting Chief Executive, David Selwyn, alongside Trust leaders and project partners.

Mark Dady, Managing Director of Kier Construction Eastern and Midlands, said: “We are delighted to be working with Sherwood Forest Hospitals to deliver this crucial project.

“Using our extensive expertise in creating modern healthcare facilities, we look forward to completing this project, which will transform the MRI service for the Trust and patients, while also creating more job opportunities for the local community.”

The new facility will enhance diagnostic resilience and capacity for both inpatient and outpatient services.

Designed with patient comfort in mind, the building will feature ground-floor facilities, dementia-friendly signage, and a separate covered entrance linked to the main hospital via a new corridor, improving accessibility and operational flow for patients and staff.

Lucy Skelton, Acting Deputy Divisional General Manager for Clinical Support, Therapies, and Outpatients, said: “This development will significantly strengthen our capacity and resilience. Faster diagnosis leads to earlier access to treatment, which is vital for improving outcomes, particularly for patients with cancer and other chronic conditions.”

In addition to advancing healthcare provision, the construction phase will also support job creation and investment in the local community.
