Kier, a UK-based construction company, has completed construction of a new surgical centre in Clydebank, Scotland, on behalf of NHS Golden Jubilee, and the centre is now open.
Modern methods of construction (MMC) were used to deliver the project efficiently, and the concrete frame and brick-clad façade were manufactured completely off-site, reducing construction time.
Modern methods of construction is a process that focuses on off-site construction techniques as alternatives to traditional building methods such as mass production and factory assembly.

The project, undertaken in collaboration with the hospital and the Scottish Government, enabled Kier to deliver various facilities to meet the growing demand for key elective specialities.
The centre was also developed with input from patients and staff and enhances the hospital’s capacity for general and orthopaedic surgery, diagnostic procedures, and endoscopy. It will also increase staff training opportunities.
The modern new facilities include:
- Five state-of-the-art orthopaedic theatres
- A central sterilising and processing department
- Five endoscopy procedure rooms – two of which are equipped with specialist training equipment for the NHS Scotland Academy
- An endoscopy decontamination unit
Further, the project was procured through Frameworks Scotland 2 and is the second phase of the Golden Jubilee’s expansion plans.

During the first phase, Kier successfully delivered the state-of-the-art eye centre. It began treating patients in November 2020 and features six purpose-built twin theatres, integrated outpatient and diagnostic facilities.
Regional Director at Kier Construction North & Scotland, Phil McDowell, said: “This state-of-the-art facility represents a significant leap forward in Scotland’s healthcare infrastructure, helping to meet the growing demand for key elective specialities.
“The collaboration between NHS Golden Jubilee, Kier, and the Scottish Government has been fantastic, and the innovative construction methods used have set a new standard for efficiency and quality.”
Chief Executive of NHS Golden Jubilee, Gordon James, said: ““With the addition of new theatres for orthopaedic surgeries and a dedicated endoscopy unit, we are prepared to treat thousands more patients who are waiting for hip and knee replacements as well as diagnostic procedures.
“This expansion will not only improve patient care but also significantly enhance staff training opportunities and clinical excellence.”
