The Gateway has won the Award for Best Care Facility for Younger Adults at the Pinders Healthcare Design Awards 2014.
The panel of judges, which included architects, developers, care operators, lenders and experienced healthcare valuers, took various factors into consideration before deciding on the overall winner. These included architectural standards and innovation, along with the needs and desires of the users of the building.
Developed by Keiro with housing partners Erimus, the innovative Gateway project is the first neuro-rehabilitation centre of its kind in the country, designed to support people with traumatic and long-term neurological conditions. The new concept is designed to cater to each individual's unique pathway to independence, facilitating cross-service working to provide the right support when the client needs it.
The contemporary landmark building, designed by P+HS Architects, accommodates a range of neuro-rehabilitation services and 40 inpatient bedrooms across six floors. The ground floor includes a specialist health and wellbeing hub with facilities including indoor hydrotherapy pool, gym, and therapy rooms. A light, bright atrium at the entrance includes a welcoming reception, café and generous informal seating area.
Alistair McDonald, Keiro’s business relationship director, explained the concept behind The Gateway: “For people who are going through rehabilitation for a brain injury, serious stroke or a spinal injury, the traditional kind of environment people have experienced has been very clinical. That is very different from the kind of environment we are moving into here. The Gateway provides a social context for people’s rehabilitation."
