Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust has this month received £12.7m from NHS England to build two brand new theatres on its East Surrey Hospital site.
With operating theatres at maximum capacity and both elective waiting lists and emergency demand continuing to grow, this has been an area of real pressure for the Trust in recent years.
This funding therefore arrives at a crucial time for local healthcare and marks a major milestone for the Trust.
In the midst of some tough financial decisions, this is a really positive step-change
The construction of two new theatres will help reduce waiting times for surgery at the Trust and support the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care for local people. The new facilities will help meet the increasing demand for elective procedures and emergency care, and ensure that East Surrey Hospital can continue to deliver the highest standards of patient care.
Work on the East Surrey Hospital site in Redhill is expected to begin later this year, with the project expected to bring significant benefits for both patients and staff once completed.
Trust Chief Executive, Angela Stevenson, said: “In the midst of some tough financial decisions, this is a really positive step-change in how we deliver for our patients.”
In June, the Trust also announced that it is advancing plans for a new Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) in Redhill as part of the national push for community-based healthcare. The centre is expected to open summer 2025,
