Overview of the Dame Clare Marx Building project

DSSR played a crucial role in the design and implementation of the mechanical and electrical services for the new Elective Orthopaedic Centre at Colchester Hospital.

Delivering a sustainable healthcare facility

Our team of experts was responsible for designing and specifying essential systems such as heating, ventilation, air conditioning, plumbing, electrical, fire safety, and medical gas. By closely collaborating with the architectural team and other consultants, we ensured seamless integration of these systems.

To meet stringent regulations and industry best practices, our designs adhered to building regulations and Health Technical Memoranda (HTMs). We prioritised energy efficiency by specifying high-performance HVAC systems, LED lighting, and energy-efficient controls. Additionally, water-saving fixtures and fittings were incorporated to reduce water consumption.

To minimise the facility’s environmental impact, we adopted an all-electric approach, reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Furthermore, the building was designed to achieve an Excellent rating under the BREEAM sustainability assessment method. By selecting sustainable materials and implementing energy-efficient strategies, we contributed to a more sustainable healthcare environment.

A new era in orthopaedic care

The new Elective Orthopaedic Centre at Colchester Hospital is now open and welcoming patients. This state-of-the-art facility is one of the largest of its kind in Europe and the largest ever built in the UK using modern methods of construction.

Designed to serve up to 10,000 patients annually, the centre boasts eight custom-designed orthopaedic theatres, three wards, and 72 inpatient beds. This advanced facility is dedicated to providing elective surgery for bones, joints, and muscles, significantly reducing waiting times and improving patient outcomes across East Suffolk and North Essex.

Hybrid construction

The Dame Clare Marx building exemplifies the power of hybrid construction methods, combining the best of traditional and modern techniques to deliver exceptional healthcare facilities faster, safer, greener, and more cost-effectively.
