DSSR played an integral role in installing the new £1.3m cutting-edge single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) CT Scanner for the Queen Elizabeth Hospital

DSSR shares: "We were appointed by Vinci FM to provide comprehensive MEP design services for the installation of a new SPECT CT scanner at Queen Elizabeth Hospital. The project involved working in a live environment, with the existing Radiology department remaining operational throughout the construction phase.

Our team coordinated the MEP design with the existing building structure, equipment supplier, and existing services. They also provided the following new MEP systems and infrastructure:

  • New medical gas system
  • Specialist drainage system to handle radioactive contaminated waste
  • New A and B distribution system that will be ultimately connected to the wider electrical infrastructure
  • Improved Radiopharmacy area to support future diagnostic and treatment across the Trust

Working with Stakeholders

This was a complex project, requiring the input and expertise of various stakeholders. In order to deliver the project safely and efficiently, we worked in close collaboration with key stakeholders including the Trust Nuclear Medicine Team, the Radiation Safety team, Vercity and the Medical Physics Department.

This approach ensured that the project was completed to the highest standards with minimal disruption to the existing Radiology department, ensuring the safety of all staff, patients and visitors throughout the construction phase.

The successful delivery of this complex project illustrates our extensive expertise in managing MEP design projects within complex healthcare facilities, our ability to work collaboratively with stakeholders, and our commitment to delivering high-quality results.

Trust Nuclear Medicine Team

We worked closely with the Trust Nuclear Medicine Team to develop a detailed design for the new Radiopharmacy area. This area was designed to meet the highest standards of safety and efficiency and to support the Trust’s future diagnostic and treatment needs.

Radiation Safety team

We also worked closely with the Radiation Safety team to ensure that the new SPECT CT scanner was installed and operated in a safe and compliant manner. This included developing detailed procedures for the handling and disposal of radioactive contaminated waste.

In addition to designing and delivering the new MEP systems, we also provided support to the Vinci FM construction team throughout the project, providing technical advice and assistance in addition to overseeing the installation and testing of the new MEP systems."
