Liverpool-based Steven Hunt & Associates has been appointed to design the mechanical and electrical installation for a pioneering £2.5m intra operative magnetic resonance imaging (IMRI) suite at the Walton Centre in Liverpool.
Designed by Race Cottam Associates, the ‘patient to scanner’ suite comprises two operating theatres with the IMRI facility in the centre and will be designed to enable surgeons to move patients between the theatres and the scanner during the operation. This will enable the surgeon to check whether, for example, more of a brain tumour still needs to be removed, before he or she finishes an operation.
The Steven Hunt team will design the building services to create a sealed unit across both the theatres and the IMRI facility, enabling consistent pressure regimes to be maintained across all three rooms.
All areas will be specified to HTM-compliant operating theatre standards, allowing surgeons to carry out specialist procedures in the scanning room where appropriate.
The scheme will be designed using Building Information Management (BIM) and will see Steven Hunt & Associates working closely with the trust’s construction partner, Interserve, and the turnkey IMRI suite contractors to ensure the building services design provides an exact match for the proposed fit-out.
Steven Hunt & Associates’ remit includes the design of all air handling and electrical services, theatre pendants, control, and surgeon’s panels.
The scheme is expected to start on site in the autumn and will take around a year to complete.
