This week we will be taking a closer look at the Estates and Facilities Management category of the Building Better Healthcare Awards 2013.
This year the judges have decided on three categories: Best Use of Financial Resources to Improve the Healthcare Estate; Best Use of Existing Estate; and Best Facilities Management Partner.
The first award, new for 2013, will recognise the use of an innovative funding strategy to directly improve the quality and standard of the healthcare estate at a time when capital funding is restricted and providers are relying on new ways of financing necessary improvements.
The judges will be looking for a scheme or strategy that has used adapted or new funding models and the award is open to all projects that have had a positive impact on the healthcare estate in any sector.
Entries must show evidence of value for money, effective cost control, budgeting and auditing improvements as well as communication between all parties involved in the project. For more information, click here.
The second award recognises the move away from new-build projects to refurbishment schemes as capital funding becomes scarce and most big hospital developments have been completed.
This will recognise a project that has resulted in improvements to existing buildings for the purpose of delivering modern healthcare services. This can include the renovation or refurbishment of the existing healthcare estate or other industrial, residential or commercial properties. The judges will be looking for a scheme that shows innovation and utilises otherwise underperforming or derelict estate.

Finally, there is the award for Best Facilities Management Partner. This recognises the contribution of facilities management partners (Hard FM services only) in helping to deliver vital services for the healthcare sector, either private or NHS.
The judges will be looking for a partner organisation that is helping to create, maintain and improve the healthcare estate for the benefit of staff and users. This can include, but is not restricted to, organisations helping to deliver energy efficiency, carbon management, fire safety, security and other physical building maintenance services.

BBH editor, Jo Makosinski, said: “These awards have been added to the 2013 competition to reflect the importance of not only the buildings themselves, but the people who help to run them and keep them in good condition for staff, patients and visitors.”
