Building Better Healthcare Awards 2011 is now open for entries – final category list
Organised by BBH, this year’s awards have changed to reflect the proposed NHS reforms and new priorities for the healthcare built environment and estates and facilities management sectors, with a new judging panel and category list.
Nominations are sought in 15 categories and the winners will be announced at a ceremony on 10 November 2011 at The Brewery in London. For the first time, the judges are accepting nominations for buildings completed in the past three years, opening the awards up to more people than ever.
The categories for the 2011 event are:
Building Design Category:
- AWARD FOR BEST MENTAL HEALTH DESIGN: An outstanding new-build or refurbishment project for mental healthcare that creates a positive, supportive and therapeutic environment for patients, visitors and staff
- AWARD FOR BEST ACUTE CARE DESIGN: An outstanding hospital new-build or refurbishment project that helps to transform clinical services and places the patient experience and staff support at the heart of the project
- AWARD FOR BEST COMMUNITY CARE DESIGN: A new-build or refurbished primary, community or social care building that realises policy ambitions to bring healthcare close to patients’ homes
Estates and Facilities Management Category:
- AWARD FOR BEST RESPONSE TO DH POLICY: A facilities management healthcare service provider that has demonstrated innovation and high achievement in responding to new/current policy such as privacy and dignity, improved communication, infection control or the patient experience
- AWARD FOR BEST USE OF INNOVATIVE FUNDING: A facilities management healthcare service provider that has demonstrated the use of innovative funding methods to deliver policy or service improvements in line with the QIPP and CQUIN agendas
- AWARD FOR BEST EFFICIENCY SAVINGS: A healthcare/service provider that can demonstrate a project or development that has had a measurable effect on carbon emissions and/or overall sustainability or has helped to save money through improvements to care pathways or patient outcomes
Patient environment category:
- AWARD FOR BEST INTERIOR DESIGN: An outstanding therapeutic space that enhances the overall experience of patients, staff and visitors through an innovative approach to interior design
- AWARD FOR BEST LANDSCAPE OR EXTERNAL SPACE: An outstanding space that enhances the overall experience of patients, staff and visitors through the design of the landscape, urbanscape or streetscape
- AWARD FOR BEST USE OF VISUAL ART IN HEALTHCARE: An outstanding, innovative and effective visual arts programme that engages with staff, patients and visitors to create a positive place for work and recuperation
People category:
- AWARD FOR BEST PROJECT TEAM: An NHS, local government or third sector team which has responded to the challenge of a project’s brief not just on time and within budget, but has demonstrated an exciting and innovative approach; engaging staff, patients and the wider community
- HEALTHCARE DESIGN CHAMPION OF THE YEAR: An individual from an NHS, local government or third sector organisation who has developed and committed their organisation to a clear vision to improve the built environment by promoting the benefits of good design and supporting, challenging and inspiring colleagues to be excellent clients
- OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT AWARD: An individual from an NHS, local government or third sector team who has contributed to major improvements in the quality and design of the healthcare environment and/or service delivery
Product category
- AWARD FOR BEST INTERIOR PRODUCT: A healthcare interiors or architectural product that has improved the therapeutic environment, enhanced patient safety for patients and staff, or made a positive contribution to service delivery. The product can be aimed at the primary, community or acute care market
- AWARD FOR BEST BUILDING PRODUCT IN HEALTHCARE: A heavy or light construction or architectural product for exteriors and interiors that has made a sustainable improvement to the therapeutic environment, enhanced safety for patients, or made a positive contribution to service delivery. Includes major fixtures and fittings
- AWARD FOR BEST PRODUCT TO IMPROVE THE PATIENT PATHWAY: A product which meets a clearly-defined need and has been proven to make an impact on the patient care pathway. Nominations must show how they meet the QIPP or CQUIN agenda
This year the judging panel will be overseen by NHS commentator, healthcare analyst, and BBH columnist, Roy Lilley. The judges are Susan Francis, programme director of Architects for Health; Kevin Oxley, national chairman of the Healthcare Estates and Facilities Management Association (HEFMA); Sarah Waller, programme director at the King’s Fund; Patricia Young, design specialist at the National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA); Colum Lowe, founder of design consultancy, BEING; Dr Sam Everington, a GP at the Bromley-by-Bow Centre in east London; and Danny Daniels of the National Association for Patient Participation.
