BAM Construction, a UK-based construction and civil engineering company, is set to begin work this summer on new infrastructure at the former Royal Liverpool University Hospital site.
This will mark a significant step forward in the ongoing redevelopment of the area.
BAM Construction has been appointed to deliver an extended podium and a new two-way entrance connecting Mount Vernon Street and Daulby Street.
This infrastructure upgrade is designed to improve access to the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, which opened its new facility in October 2022.
Work is now progressing into the final stages
The project is expected to be completed by autumn 2026.
It forms part of a broader strategic masterplan being developed by NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group (UHL Group) in partnership with the government’s New Hospital Programme and Liverpool City Council’s Planning and Regeneration teams.
Meanwhile, demolition of the old Royal Liverpool University Hospital building has reached a major milestone.
Specialist contractor DSM, appointed to carry out the decommissioning and demolition, has completed the high-reach demolition of the 11-storey ward block.
The project is expected to be completed by autumn 2026
Work is now progressing into the final stages, with DSM continuing on site until October 2025 to complete the removal of substructures, including foundations and tunnels, and to prepare the ground for future use.
The old hospital, a distinctive part of Liverpool’s cityscape since its opening in 1978, provided healthcare services to millions across the region for over four decades.
Its removal paves the way for a long-term regeneration project that will reshape the eastern end of the city centre.
Among the planned developments is a new Maggie’s Centre for cancer support, which is currently progressing through the local authority planning process.

Commissioned, designed, and funded by the Steve Morgan Foundation, the centre will be located near Prescot Street and is expected to open in 2027, subject to planning approval.
In addition, early plans are being developed for Health Innovation Liverpool, a proposed health and life sciences campus that will form a central element of the site’s future.
Led by the University of Liverpool in partnership with UHL Group, the campus would house medical, dental and nursing training facilities, support NHS research activity, and accommodate health-focused businesses to drive growth in the Liverpool City Region’s life sciences sector.
The comprehensive master plan is intended to provide a framework for phased development over the next decade, ensuring the former hospital site continues to serve the city as a hub for healthcare, innovation, and community support.
