Privately-operated hospital will help relieve pressure on the NHS and reduce waiting times

Assura has completed a new-build daycase hospital in Glendon, Kettering.

Glendon Wood Hospital, funded by Assura, opened its doors on 1 August and includes two operating theatres, an endoscopy unit, and outpatient consulting rooms, alongside a radiology department including digital mammography, static CT and MRI, X-Ray, and ultrasound.

The completion comes after the Government outlined its intention to leverage the use of independent sector-led community diagnostic centres (CDCs) to reduce pressure on the NHS and cut waiting times for patients.

The plans are part of a wider strategy to maximise independent sector capacity to treat NHS patients more quickly.

This new hospital, which began development in 2021, will provide services for NHS and private patients to support the growing population of Kettering and alleviate the increased demand on local hospital services.

Glendon Wood Hospital was developed to provide an extension to services offered at Woodland Hospital, part of Ramsay Health Care UK, just under four miles away.

It also creates new employment opportunities in the local area, with approximately 150 roles in nursing, nursing support, clinical, administration, and support services, and many opportunities for training and professional development.

Paul Warwick, director of sustainability and projects at Assura, said: “We are delighted to see this – our 101st development – reach completion and open to patients in Kettering.

“It will be a huge asset to Ramsay Health Care UK and the Woodland Hospital, with demand on the hospital’s services having drastically increased due to the local population growth.

“In line with the Government’s newly-announced community diagnostic centre initiatives, this building will help alleviate this demand through the provision of a modern, fit-for-purpose, and sustainable building offering diagnostic services for the local community.”

Lisa Powell, operations director at Ramsay Health Care UK, added: “Woodland Hospital plays a major role within the Northamptonshire community and the additional surgical and diagnostic capacity provided by Glendon Wood Hospital will allow Ramsay Health Care UK to continue to provide much-needed support for the local healthcare system.”
