Willmott Dixon has reached the halfway stage of the £30m regeneration of the former Barnes Hospital site in south west London, with a new NHS mental health facility and specialist school on track to open in autumn 2027.
The project is being delivered for South West London and St George's Mental Health NHS Trust and LocatED, the Department for Education's property company, following procurement through the Southern Construction Framework.
Once completed, the facility will include a new NHS community mental health facility alongside the London River Academy and a 90-place specialist school for children and young people aged seven to 19 with social, emotional and mental health needs, operated by The Beckmead Trust.
The Beckmead Trust is a specialist, behavior-based multi-academy trust running a family of schools exclusively for children and young people with special educational needs (SEN).
The new NHS building will accommodate a range of community mental health services that relocated from Barnes Hospital to Livingston House in Teddington in 2023.
To mark the construction milestone, project partners, community representatives and local stakeholders visited the site to view progress.
Attendees included the Mayor of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, Cllr Nancy Baldwin, and Sarah Olney MP.
The Barnes redevelopment forms part of South West London and St George's Mental Health NHS Trust's wider £280m investment programme to modernise mental health facilities across south west London.
Alongside the Barnes scheme, Willmott Dixon has been provisionally appointed through the New Hospital Programme’s Hospital 2.0 Alliance to deliver the Women and Children’s Hospital in Cornwall.
The firm is currently delivering the £142m Emergency Care Building at Derriford Hospital for University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust, which is also part of the New Hospital Programme.
