Proposal to create centre of excellence for orthopaedic surgery

Clatterbridge Hospital is to be given a facelift as part of a drive to become a centre of excellence for orthopaedic surgery.

Health chiefs at Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust have applied for planning permission to build a £3m extension to the operating suite.

The part single, part two-storey suite has been designed with further expansion in mind as the hospital bids to become a regional specialist facility.

The move comes after a major review of the trust’s services, which resulted in a proposal for two additional theatres at Clatterbridge. Planned surgery, emergencies and complex daycase surgery will remain at the neighbouring Arrowe Park Hospital.

If planning permission is granted, work will start in November 2014.

A spokeswoman said: “This work will enable us to build on the trust's regional reputation for orthopaedic surgery and provide a centre of excellence.”
