According to the UK Sepsis Trust, every year about 48,000 people die from sepsis-related illness. Getting treatment to the patient rapidly is essential if as many lives as possible are to be saved. When every second counts, Medstor module carts take care to the point of treatment quickly and efficiently.

Medstor’s healthcare materials management solutions are designed to support the outstanding work done in NHS and private hospitals by making it easy to store, locate and access drugs, consumables, and other medical equipment. This gives clinical staff more time to spend with patients and, in the case of emergencies like sepsis, allows them to respond faster to life-threatening situations. Carts can also be RFID-enabled for improved cart management.

Medstor sepsis cart

The Medstor sepsis cart was developed by Medstor’s in-house design team to support the ‘Sepsis Six’, a set of six tasks developed by the UK Sepsis Trust to be instituted within one hour at the frontline. The six tasks are oxygen, blood cultures, intravenous antibiotics, fluids, haemoglobin and lactate measurement, and urine output monitoring.

The cart has six drawers, each labelled with one of the Sepsis Six tasks. It has two accessory rails and holders for a sharps bin, oxygen cylinder and files. Coloured bright orange with SEPSIS in large letters on one side, the cart is easy to identify. Four strong castors ensure easy manoeuvrability. The cart also provides an extra work surface, with a further additional extendable section that can be used if needed. All in all, it provides an effective way to take sepsis care quickly to where it is needed, but is easy to store when not in use.

The Sepsis Six Care Bundle as a whole has been shown to reduce the relative risk of death by 46.6% when delivered to patients with severe sepsis within one hour. With the Medstor sepsis cart, nurses have everything they need to administer the care bundle all in one place, ready to be positioned close to the patient. Partnering with RFiD Discovery, the Medstor sepsis module carts can be RFID-enabled, which brings a whole new level of efficiency and accuracy to the critical task of sepsis response. By incorporating RFID tags and readers, healthcare professionals can optimise the management of sepsis carts, ensuring that the carts remain stocked with essential supplies and are readily available when needed. This helps to ensure a high standard of patient care and safety in the fight against this life-threatening condition.

What is sepsis?

The UK Sepsis Trust describes sepsis as a life-threatening condition that arises when the body’s response to an infection injures its own tissues and organs. The body’s immune system, which normally helps to protect us and fight infection, goes into an overwhelming and life-threatening response that can lead to shock, multiple organ failure and sometimes death, especially if not recognised early and treated promptly.

Like strokes or heart attacks, sepsis is a medical emergency that requires rapid diagnosis and treatment. Symptoms can be similar to those of flu and include severe breathlessness and a high fever. Sepsis can develop quickly from initial infection and progress to septic shock in as little as 12 to 24 hours.
