Patients, staff and visitors can now experience much-improved parking facilities at Sunderland Royal Hospital as VINCI Construction UK has completed a new £6.1m multi-storey car park on the site.
City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust appointed VINCI Construction UK to design and build the facility, which has 766 parking spaces, 28 of which are for disabled people.
The external area has also been landscaped to create a scenic view as patients and visitors drive into the hospital grounds.
Ken Brenner, chief executive of City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, said: “The new facility provides invaluable additional parking on site, bringing the total number of car parking spaces to 1,700. The car park was a crucial element in an improved traffic management system for the trust and confirms our continuing priority to ensuring easy access to our services for patients and their families.”
Keith Shivers, regional director of VINCI Construction UK, added: “Sunderland Royal Hospital is a 970-bed acute hospital, so the car park was essential to accommodate the significant number of visitors they have on a daily basis.
“We worked closely with the client on this contract and our joint objective was to fundamentally enhance patient care and to create a safe, comfortable visit.”
