Rollout of NHS-approved diabetes app in Kent
Largest ever rollout of a my mhealth’s diabetes digital therapeutic programme deemed a success
my mhealth has announced the successful rollout of its NHS-approved diabetes digital therapeutic platform, myDiabetes, with 100,000 patients in Kent and Medway now able to better manage their condition.
Since the much-anticipated launch of the rollout in early April, more than 400 patients have already been given access to the myDiabetes platform, accessing more than 350 educational sessions.
Marking a step change in the way patients are able to interact with their clinician, patients are given access by their health professional and are then asked to fill in their details such as their blood glucose levels or BMI to support the delivery of the service.
The more an individual knows about their diabetes, the more capable they are to manage their condition and the risks of developing further complications
This will directly improve patient care by providing greater accessibility to their most-important healthcare information.
With diabetes affecting around one in 14 people, or 4.8 million across the UK, it is crucial that support services bring patients and their clinicians closer together, while also giving patients greater control over their own healthcare.
And the myDiabetes app has been designed to empower patients in self management of their condition, with a user-friendly digital programme that offers quick and easy access on smart phones, tablets, and computers from anywhere, at any time.
The app also provides a unique exercise and diet intervention programme, DMFit, to help patients increase physical activity and improve their knowledge around nutrition.
In addition, the in-app content is specifically tailored to enable patients to monitor their blood glucose, HbA1C, and other risk factors and access to an expert educational programme allows them to learn about their conditions with the aim of reducing their risk of serious long-term complications.
Following the success of the Kent rollout, my mhealth plans to roll out the myDiabetes app to a further 30 clinical services before the end of this year.
Global transformation lead for my mhealth, Ian Thompson, said: “Diabetes education is a core component of a patient’s care. The more an individual knows about their diabetes, the more capable they are to manage their condition and the risks of developing further complications.
It’s important that we continue to evolve services to ensure we make the best care available and myDiabetes provides an easy-to-use digital self-management tool, with access to an educational programme, targeted evidence-based information, and advice
“It’s exciting for us to be working closely with multiple diabetes teams throughout the Kent and Medway area.”
Kent and Medway diabetes and CVD transformation and development manager, Ian Butcher, adds: “All of us here at the CCG alongside the Paul Carr Diabetes Trust feel this is a really-fantastic step forward for people living with diabetes in Kent.
“It’s important that we continue to evolve services to ensure we make the best care available and myDiabetes provides an easy-to-use digital self-management tool, with access to an educational programme, targeted evidence-based information, and advice.
“It is designed to complement our existing diabetes services and gives all who use it digital access to tools to better manage their condition for the general improvement of their health and wellbeing.”
