Construction preparations are underway for the redevelopment of the new Leighton Hospital in Crewe

Mid-Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is acting on ambitious plans to build a new replacement Leighton Hospital in Crewe.

Preparatory infrastructure work is set to take place in the coming months as part of the project.

The Trust has earmarked land to the north of the existing Leighton Hospital for the new facility, having acquired the site last year.

As part of the preparations, essential work will be carried out in and around Leighton Hospital, which may lead to temporary travel disruptions.

One key aspect of this phase involves installing cabling to supply electrical power to the new hospital site.

This work will affect several roads in the area, including Middlewich Road, Brian Palin Way, Tottys Hall Way, and Flowers Lane.

Additionally, a new roundabout will be constructed on Flowers Lane by the Vistry Group as part of its housing development to the east of the hospital.

Jim O’Brien, MEP Lead for the Trust’s Healthier Futures team, which is overseeing the hospital project, emphasised the importance of this preparatory phase.

O’Brien said “Building a new hospital is a major project, which is why we must undertake some critical engineering works well in advance of the actual hospital construction work.

“During this period, it is likely that traffic management measures will be in place, which will impact travel around the area, and to and from Leighton Hospital.

“We are currently liaising with our partners to plan the work and will share full details with the public once everything has been confirmed.”

An outline planning application for the hospital will be submitted to Cheshire East Council this summer

The Trust also envisions the development of a health and care neighbourhood surrounding the new Leighton Hospital.

An outline planning application for the hospital will be submitted to Cheshire East Council this summer, marking another key milestone in the project.
