James Paget University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has acquired land for its new hospital, advancing plans for a state-of-the-art facility under the national New Hospital Programme.
The trust has unveiled its vision for the “Future Paget” hospital, presenting updated conceptual designs and confirming the site’s location on its existing estate.
The new hospital, with a projected investment of between £1 billion and £1.5 billion, will replace the current structure, which was built using reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) and has been identified as one of seven priority sites for redevelopment under the national programme.
The upcoming facility is expected to transform healthcare delivery in the region, offering approximately 600 beds, all in single-patient rooms, and spanning a footprint of 114,469 sqm.
Backed by £9.8 million in government funding
It will feature modern infrastructure, improved patient and staff environments, and enhanced access, including a new entrance and a multi-storey car park.
Chief Executive of James Paget Hospital, Jo Segasby, said: “We are delighted to share our vision for our new hospital, which gives our patients and communities a feel for what ‘Future Paget’ could look like.
“These are early-stage designs, and we are seeking feedback from our patients, staff, and residents across Gorleston, Great Yarmouth and Waveney to help shape the final plans.”
The newly acquired land, located west of the current hospital, was purchased with £9.8 million in funding from the Department of Health and Social Care.
The groundwork is now underway for Future Paget
The business case for the purchase was approved in February, and the land will enable key preparatory works to begin ahead of the planned construction start in 2027-28.
Health Minister Karin Smyth, said: “I am truly delighted to confirm that we have issued £9.8 million to James Paget University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to purchase land from Great Yarmouth Borough Council,” said Smyth. “Today’s land purchase is a vital first step to deliver this much-needed new hospital for the Great Yarmouth community.”
The enabling works planned for the newly acquired land include a contractor compound, additional parking facilities, and a multi-storey car park for staff.
The site will also be used to install a new access road, relocate sewerage and utilities, and move an existing solar panel array currently situated at the rear of the staff car park.
The hospital continues to work with local communities and stakeholders as it progresses the design and planning phases of the new hospital project.
